Team USA U18s beat Czech Republic in World Championship Game 2 – The Rink Live

LANDSHUT, Germany — After a less than ideal first period, Team USA exploded in the second with four unanswered goals to propel themselves to another win at the 2022 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship. The Americans beat the Czech Republic, 6-2.

Czechia got off to a good start, scoring early in the first half thanks to a Jiri Kulich penalty goal. The Czechs then had two straight first-half power plays that stifled the USA attack for the first 20 minutes.

The Americans’ first goal came from Isaac Howard (Hudson, WI / Minnesota-Duluth) on the power play — Howard’s fifth goal of the tournament in two games played.

A few minutes later, the American team quickly scored consecutive goals. The two goals from Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn. / Minnesota) and Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass. / Boston College) were only 30 seconds apart.

USA captain Rutger McGroarty (Lincoln, Neb./Michigan) nailed the final goal in second to extend the USA lead to 4-1.

Things calmed down a bit after the second half, but the last 20 minutes still had something to offer.

The American team added another score on a power play opportunity after a backstop from the Czech Republic. Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, PA/Minnesota) was credited with the goal.

The Czechs salvaged one with just under 10 minutes left in regulation time, but Team USA added one more – McGroarty’s second of the game – to seal a 6-2 victory.

After another victory, the Americans occupy first place in Group A with six points, three points ahead of Canada and the Czech Republic.

Team USA will have the day off after back-to-back matches, then play their final pool game on Tuesday, April 26 at 12:30 p.m. CT against Germany. The quarter-final matches will be played on Thursday in Landshut and Kaufbeuren.
