Shooting sports United States | Federal Showcases HOA Target Loads for Skeet, Sport Field and Trap Competitors at SHOT Show 2022

Since its introduction last August at the 2021 Minnesota HOA State Championship Shoot, Federal Ammunition’s new High Over All cartridge product has won favor with top competitive shotgun shooters. That’s no big surprise, as Federal is known for aiming for the top spot in all segments of the ammo market, including the premium competition target loadout crowd.

A solid platform to build a round from, Federal HOA’s tapered shell design also opens the floodgates as to options for reloaders.

Federal staff wisely took advantage of Minnesota’s local competitive shooting talent, especially sport clay shooters, to launch the HOA cartridges last year and build excitement for the new product. Reception has been positive, with many professional shooters praising HOA’s felt low recoil and strong tournament performance.

What sets Federal’s HOA cartridge apart from the pack is the unique one-piece Podium wad. As with all cartridges, the wad is there to provide a gas-tight seal between the shot load and the rapidly expanding hot gas generated when the powder burns. This seal prevents gas from blowing past the shot, which won’t help anyone break clays. The HOA’s one-piece Podium wad is described on the Federal website as providing “even compression to protect the shot and produce the most consistent patterns.”

As for the one-piece Podium wad, Federal says it “provides even compression to protect the shot and produce the most consistent patterns.” A solid brass head, target cartridge primer, and eight-segment crimp also contribute to HOA’s consistency and performance.

Federal’s HOA cartridge design also sports a brass head and one-piece conical tube shell. The integral base wad is formed from a single piece of strong plastic, giving it strength and rigidity – the perfect base for constructing a cartridge. Tapered shell HOA cartridges allow for more reloads with a wide variety of wads. Federal claims that HOA is “the best plastic target load on the market in any discipline… [it’s] the best rechargeable case on the market, without a doubt.

At the 2022 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range, Federal had the new HOA cartridges available to shoot. Looking for a load of sporting clays, as that’s what the shotgun setup at this end of the range most resembled to me, I went with 1 oz HOA shells at 1 290 fps with #7½ and #8 shots.

These high-end competition target loads shoot like a dream, with low recoil felt.

The effects of the new Podium wad and its hard lead, high antimony payload in HOA were noticeable at all ranges I attempted during Range Day. It was quite effective even against distant birds at 35 meters. For me, HOA is a hard-hitting clay grinder that’s as good or better than anything I’ve tried before. Perhaps best of all, Federal’s HOA Competition Target Loads also lived up to their reputation for soft shooting, which my shoulders appreciated during a busy day of shooting.

The Federal High Over All line currently has 16 different 12-gauge target loads for skeet, sport tops, and trap. Under gauge HOA loads are also coming in the future.

Additionally, during Range Day last week at SHOT Show 2022, Federal made their new highland steel cartridges available with a wad of paper. More information on this charge will be available soon.
