Seal Series Warhawks win with Saturday’s 5-2 win over Georgia State

MONROE, Louisiana – second year pitcher Cole Cressend allowed just two runs, one earned, in six innings, a career high, while freshman Zach Shaw followed by three shutout innings as ULM held off Georgia State, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Warhawk Field.

The win clinched a series win for ULM after the Warhawks won 5-3 in 11 innings on Friday night.

Cressend (2-2) allowed just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Shaw didn’t allow a hit or walk while posting two strikeouts to earn his first career save.

ULM (8-12-1 overall, 3-1-1 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead on Saturday when the seniors Grant Schulz doubled with two outs in the first inning. Second year Michelle Artzberger followed by a fly ball into left field, but the ball was dropped by Georgia State’s Max Ryerson, allowing Schulz to score for the 1-0 lead.

The Warhawks added to the lead in the third inning when Artzberger homered 2 runs to right center field, his third homer of the season, extending the lead to 3-0.

GSU’s Luke Boynton hit a 2-run homer in the sixth to cut the deficit to one run, 3-2. However, it was GSU’s only offensive threat of the game.

The ULM took over the points at the end of the seventh inning. Senior ryan cupit and Schulz opened the inning with back-to-back singles and moved up to second and third on a sacrificial bunt from Artzberger. A pair of wild throws allowed Cupit and Schulz to score for the 5-2 lead.

Schulz had two of ULM’s six hits and scored three times. Boynton had two of GSU’s three hits and had two RBIs.

ULM moves into the playoff sweep at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Warhawk Field.
