CBS Orders Drama 'Cal Fire' From 'SEAL TEAM' Star, 'Grey's Anatomy' Alumni

CBS has ordered a drama titled Cal Fire and with Max Thieriot (SEAL Team), who also co-wrote the pilot and serves as executive producer, according to Variety. The potential series will be inspired by Thieriot’s experiences in Northern California fire country.

Cal Fire will focus on Bode Donovan, a young convict from Northern California who hopes to find redemption and a shorter sentence by fighting fires alongside other inmates. This series will mark the first time that Thieriot writes for television. Tony Phelan (Grey’s Anatomy) and Joan Rater (Grey’s Anatomy) also co-wrote the story.

About 1,600 inmates were used to fight at various fire camps in May 2021 under a California program. After the controversy of critics who found that those who participated in the program found it difficult to apply for firefighter positions after their release, a law was passed which gives ex-convicts a more effective means of obtaining the removal of their criminal record and gives them a better chance of being hired.
