Abdelgawad wins C-USA player of the week award

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After back-to-back epic returns for WKU women’s basketball on the road, it’s only fitting that the leader Meral Abdelgawad wins Conference USA Player of the Week honors.

Abdelgawad was a catalyst in WKU’s two return wins. In Miami (Ohio), Abdelgawad scored 14 points in the second half and 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime at Fairleigh Dickinson. She had an equalizer layup with 28 seconds remaining in Miami, then followed up with a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining to give WKU a lead of two. Abdelgawad scored the last five points for WKU in the second OT against Fairleigh Dickinson to seal the road victory.

The Cairo, Egypt native has averaged 26.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game this week. She tied her career with 33 points at Fairleigh Dickinson, a mark she had just established two games previously against Tennessee Tech. She became just the second NCAA Division I player this season to record multiple games with 33 or more points.

Abdelgawad leads C-USA in total points (200) and points per game (18.2) and is third in total rebounds (92) and total steals (28).

This is Abdelgawad’s first C-USA player of the week award. The senior won the C-USA Freshman of the Week title three times during her rookie season.
